I've seen the new Stanley's while riding down North Ave. many times; on Saturday, I managed to stop in. It's definitely bigger, but doesn't seem to stock much more product. The refrigerated section is a little longer, and they had the same on-sale broccoli on several different endcaps. But other than even brighter lighting and wider aisles, it doesn't seem that much different. Less intimate, more supermarket-y. Which, you can probably guess means: I don't really like it. At least they kept the same silly paper streamer decorations.

When I first started shopping at Stanley's some years ago, I couldn't believe how! cheap! everything was. In fact, it was a trip to Stanley's that aided in prompting me to start this site. However, now that I spend a lot of time in independent stores, checking out local delis and produce stands, it doesn't seem that cheap to me anymore. Factor in that a lot of veggies and fruit from Stanley's goes bad within a couple days of purchase, and I don't really see a need to keep shopping there. I guess it'll do in a pinch if you can't make it to a farmer's market, or an ethnic market with a decent produce section, but it's no longer a destination for me.

With that said, I bought:

- 2 kiwis
- 2 plums
- a mango
- a peach
- bag of spinach
- pistachios
- guava juice

Total: $14.77

On a cheerier note: later on Saturday I ended up at Blind Faith in Evanston, for one of my favorite dinners (seitan marsala). Afterwards, we stopped at the bakery counter, where I bought a few baked goods; when I was vegan, I dreamed about their vegan chocolate cake, salivating in my sleep. Anyway, what really excited me was buying a rather large tub of their white miso and onion dressing. It's so good! And it makes the perfect dipping sauce for my favorite steamed vegetable, broccoli. I wish I knew how to make it myself.

Do you know anything about shops on the (near) south side? I like Richwell and the other Chinatown stores; I don't know as much about shops in Pilsen or Little Village. If you have some info on them (I checked your stores list, but it didn't have any listed), I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

man, that does sound pretty high. i remember when we'd walk outta there with a few bags & the total would be under $10.

i agree, with my produce box & other various trips around town, i just don't need to get there as much as before. i still think it's probably a good destination to stock up on party planning stuff, but we can't have those big parties anymore.....

thanks for the update!

Audrey - Unfortunately, I'm not really familiar with the markets in Pilsen, since they're not a quick bike ride away. I'll try and make a point to go check a few out though. If anyone reading this knows of any good ones, please share!

Ellen - yeah, I was surprised by how expensive it was too, oh well.

Hi there,

Great site! Instead of Stanleys, if you're in the Irving Park neighborhood near Six Corners, try Family Food Market. Their selection is terrific, they serve a multi-ethnic clientelle with great produce, fabulous deli, D'amato's breads, Polish, Hispanic, Italian groceries, the best homemade quacamole and salsas, Greek olives, cheap milk and more. We buy all our fresh food there - except meat. I'm not as thrilled with their red meat, although their chicken is fine.

Thanks, Kate. I actually went to Family Food Market a couple years ago, though I'm having trouble finding the entry about it. It's a good recommendation though, I really liked the place! It's just a bit far for a lunchtime bike ride, so I haven't had a chance to go back since.
