----------------------------- I'm baaaaaack. Made it home safe from Ghana, thanks for all the support and good wishes that were received in my absence. I have a lot to say about the trip - and naturally, about their markets and shops - but I'm still collecting my thoughts. Being there definitely had an impact on my consumptive behavior, prompted an evaluation of my eating habits...but more on that at a later date. While there I consumed a ton of starchy foods, primarily cassava and plantain. Most meat served was chicken, which I don't particularly like, and kind of gross chicken at that. So I think I'm done with the bird. A homemade hot pepper sauce, hotter than any hot sauce I've ever had, accompanied every meal. Every morning I ate fresh pineapple, watermelon, or papaya, grown on nearby land. The starchyness of most of my meals led me to crave produce, veggies, more fruit. To satiate, I rode my bike to Stanley's today, after a stop by the Renegade Craft Fair. At Stanley's, I bought: - 2 heads of broccoli total: $16.20 Generally, food bought at Stanley's must be eaten within two or three days, or else it goes bad. Which shouldn't be a problem, I don't really feel like eating anything except produce. But that's when I feel like eating at all; unfortunately, I left Ghana not feeling so well in the belly. I was really careful not to drink unpurified water, and to wash my hands before eating, careful about all that stuff, but somehow ended up alternating between occasional hunger and moderate nausea for the last three or four days. Not fun. Since I'm not feeling up for a fast, it feels best to stick with fruit and vegetables till this passes. * posted by j3s 2003.September.20That's a gorgeous picture of the tako-su, but what is it, exactly? Is the red stuff cabbage, octopus, or something entirely different? I really enjoy this blog. * posted by Brianna september 21, 2003 01:17 pmFeel better! Hopefully it's just a bit of unrest from the water, etc. that was in the food you were eating, and will pass with some good food, rest, and clean water. Hugs. * posted by shannon september 21, 2003 01:28 pmBrianna - Tako-su is a cold salad made of boiled octopus, cucumber, wakame seaweed, rice vinegaer, lemon juice, and prehaps a few other things. I haven't been able to find an actual recipe for it, but whenever I order it, that's what seems to be in it. If you like octopus, or squiddy fish, you should try it sometime! Shannon - Thanks, it's been a few days, and while I'm not feeling great, I'm kind of better. Laying low for a bit. I must say, my appreciation for clean water has been fully renewed. * posted by j3s september 22, 2003 09:58 amPost a comment
