2003.April.13
----------------------------- Lacey's been writing about conservation lately, echoing thoughts and concerns I've had about the ridiculous amount of packaging that's so socially acceptable. Expected, taken for granted. In a thread, she solicited ideas on how to be less wasteful; comments ranged from composting to reusing water bottles and Nalgenes, recycling, and making art out of garbage. I wish I had a place to start a compost heap, but we don't even have a backyard, just a small square of dirt and rocks. A girl can dream, can't she? Such an odd thing to wish for: a rotting pile of garbage on property. But it would be nice. Anyway, just wanted to give a shout out to Lacey, and everyone else who steps back from the cycle of consumption to account for just how much waste is generated without thought. Knowing is half the battle. * posted by j3s 2003.April.13you could start a worm farm. they take up way less room than compost heaps, and the castings and liquid are suitable for container plants. plus you'll have heaps of squiggly little pets! * posted by pippa april 14, 2003 07:15 amWord, Jes. I think you can get plastic composting boxes (rubbermaid?), for the urbanites who like their fresh soil. Now, this idea seems a little strange to me, because isn't some huge piece of hard plastic an oxymoron in the composting realm? I can just see it sitting around for a million years in a landfill after it's done it's job composting all our banana peels. We have a little fence-y thing right behind our back gate that holds leaves and other such things...I'm thinking it's a compost, but with just leaves. The rats would be all over anything else I guess. I'll investigate this fenced in compost thing and let you know. In TN, my parents live out in the country, and they just dug a huge hole about an acre behind the house and dump all their biodegradeable things in there. In the middle of nowhere you can do stuff like that. The soil is amazing, from what I gather. * posted by lacey april 14, 2003 11:57 amPippa - Good idea! I used to make little villages for worms when I was a kid, so that sounds kind of fun. Nice site btw, good luck with the Iyengar :) Lacey - Hearing people talk about country soil makes me wish for a big space to grow vegetables. I love the city life, but do miss good dirt... * posted by j3s april 14, 2003 02:28 pmPost a comment
